Hi, I am Julie.

My mission is to help you discover a way of living that makes you feel more alive & confident in your body so you can do more of what you’re here to do. As women, we are SO STRONG & CAPABLE but we have been conditioned not to fully embody and embrace this fact. I say, NO MORE. You can build incredible physical & mental strength though your fitness that resources you in every aspect of your life. So that you can go on more adventures, have more fun, and do all that you dream of.

Joseph Campbell said, “The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are”.

And I believe that to be true.

For the last 4 years, I have helped high achieving women overcome the challenges keeping them from the body they love and the results they’re after. Before pursuing a career in fitness, I spent a decade working in sales for large corporations. I worked with doctors, nurses, and other medial professionals educating and promoting medicines for diabetes.

Working within the healthcare system equipped me with an invaluable perspective. I realized that even the most educated and experienced medical professionals are throwing their hands in the air. Our current healthcare system is failing us. Making us fatter, sicker, and more distracted than ever before.

At that same time, I was acutely aware of my own personal struggle to stay fit, lean, and energized as a busy working professional. Spending countless hours on the road, working through lunch, and entertaining in the evenings made eating healthy and at home challenging.

Slowly weight was creeping on. I was finding myself tired and going through the motions. I was constantly taking measures to minimize weight gain, by trying different diets, skipping meals, going to the gym for hours, and eating less and less. All of which left me feeling mentally drained, frustrated, and like I was losing control. Back then I thought I was doing the right things. I followed what I read in fitness magazines and what the so-called experts said.

  • I cut carbs.
  • I avoided saturated fat.
  • I watched my cholesterol.
  • I toned with high reps and low weight.
  • I went fat free.
  • I did crunches galore.
  • I’d eat less and exercise more.
  • I did cardio till the cows came home.

None of this got me the results I was after, which was to feel lean and strong in my body, happy, and full of energy and focus. I remember thinking, maybe this is what “getting older” is about. (Spoiler: I was totally wrong☺)

After a dream move to Costa Rica (more below), I was able to dedicate myself fully to my passion of health and fitness. I applied the critical eye I had honed working in healthcare to learn more about exercise, nutrition, behavioral psychology, and scientific research. And what I discovered is this.

There ABSOLUTELY is a more effective way.

You can be lean, fit, and totally alive at any age. And I want to help you achieve it!

arrow_smallYou can’t hate your way to health and a body you love. You have to find a way to enjoy the process.

arrow_smallYou have to be clear on why you are doing this. Because there is no end date to your healthy lifestyle, you have to start slow by creating healthy habits that you practice day in and day out.

arrow_smallYou need a systematic approach to your healthy and fit lifestyle, and it all starts with Active Passion. This is the essential first piece to building an individualized framework that works for you and is sustainable.

arrow_smallSetting up your environments to support your healthy lifestyle will insure you succeed. This includes your kitchen (bye, bye doritos), but also your mindset and inner circle.

arrow_smallThe only way exercise can be sustainable is if you find joy in it. #LoveTheWayYouMove

arrow_smallDo strength training with intense exercise will keep you feeling and looking young. You’ll fall in love with how you feel when finished.

My Costa Rica Story

One day, I decided to follow my heart. It was a decision, totally and completely for me. A decision that to some, may have sounded crazy. A decision, where I’d be forced to leave my successful, lucrative, and comfortable career. A decision that meant I’d have to leave my city life, my friends, and my family. A decision where I’d risk everything I had worked to achieve, for the promise of nothing. But it was also, this amazing opportunity. To take a chance on myself and trust my intuition, so I could fulfill a lifelong dream. A chance to trail blaze my own way.

“If the path before you is clear, you’re probably on someone else’s.” – Joseph Campbell

Up until this point in my life, I had done everything I was “supposed to do”. I graduated from university, secured a highly sought after position, made money, accepted a promotion, bought a house, moved to a city, and so on and so forth. Which is great, except for a small problem.

That life never felt like it really fit. It felt like a suit tailored for someone else. I dreamt of contributing to the world in a different way. Near the end of 2010 I followed my heart, boarded a plane with only 2 suitcases, to begin a new adventure on the beaches of Costa Rica.

My only guarantee: ME.

Moving to Costa Rica marked a shift in my mindset from “what I thought I was supposed to be doing” to a new way of thinking “what was I meant to be doing”.

I finally gave myself permission to pursue more of what I wanted to do without expectation and judgment. Total freedom.

I share my story not to convince you to move to a foreign country (although you could), but instead inspire you to take action towards those dreams in your head, that are constantly being thwarted by that voice telling you a bunch of lies. Your inner critic that says, you’re crazy to think you can, you’re selfish to want more, and you’re foolish to think you’re important enough. I wish for us all to say a collective “bye, bye” to that voice. Right now.

Life In Costa Rica

I’ll be honest, when I moved to Costa Rica I didn’t know what was going to happen. There were plenty of “what if’s” I couldn’t answer. But what I did have was this deep belief that I would be ok and figure it out. I trusted myself. I think the world rewards those who trust themselves. A few months after arriving, I met this guy that I connected with who was passionate about fitness and surfing just like I. He too had just left his professional career in San Francisco. We discovered we had lived 4 blocks away from each other in San Francisco and went to the same gym even though we had never met or seen each other before. Bizarro, right?

If you do follow your bliss you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living. Follow your bliss and don’t be afraid, and doors will open where you didn’t know they were going to be.” – Joseph Campbell

You’ve probably caught on by now that the guy I am talking about is Nick. It wasn’t long after our serendipitous meeting, we brainstormed our very first beach boot camp and the seed for Saltwater Fit was planted. That was over 7 years ago. And, as they say, the rest is history. If any of my story resonates with you, I’d love to hear from you. Drop me a line at julie@saltwaterfit.com Or better yet, let’s jump on the phone and talk live about fitness and whatever else :).
